Using Mirrors As Decorations

!±8± Using Mirrors As Decorations

Mirrors can be used to create dazzling decorative effects within the home (and indeed other environments such as the office or retail spaces). They have been used for many centuries as decorative items and no doubt will continue to be used for a long time to come. There are many ways decorative mirrors can be used and many effects and benefits that can be derived from their use. Some of these effects and benefits are listed below:

To add/ enhance natural light - if mirrors are deployed where natural light is limited they can help improve the light levels and hence improve the "feel" of the room. They can also help to reduce energy costs by reducing the requirement for artificial light. To Create a perception of space - if mirrors are strategically placed in small spaces they can create the perception of increased space as the reflections within them can trick the eye into believing there are hidden depths to the room. Serve a useful purpose - It is always worth remembering that even though you may be using mirrors for decorative purposes they also serve a useful purpose so when putting a mirror in place you should think about how it might be used - shaving, makeup, security, etc. Feng shui - it is believed in the art of Feng Shui that correctly placed mirrors can help ward off evil spirits. Accentuate a positive feature of your home - a strategically placed mirror can be used to reflect a positive feature of your home, making it visible from more than one angle or simply highlighting the feature in a reflection. Lit mirrors - as described earlier mirrors can improve the light availability in a room, you can further enhance this through the use of lit mirrors. This can be particularly important in small rooms such as bathrooms and cloakrooms where it might be difficult to obtain natural light. Lit mirrors can also provide very useful task specific lighting. Decorative mirrors can offer an inexpensive way to change theme of a room based upon the style of the mirror (particularly the frame) - if you have a simply designed room then changing the style of mirrors used can dramatically alter the entire theme of the room (particularly if the mirrors are large or in prominent positions). For example moving from a simple modern frame to a bold antique frame can move the room from a modern feel to a more historic / antique feel. One extra factor to consider when using decorative mirrors is the type of material used to actually make the mirror itself. In many circumstances safety is an important consideration (particularly where children, the elderly or infirm are involved). In installations where safety is a consideration it is important to ensure that you use a shatterproof mirror. Shatterproof mirrors are specifically designed to ensure that dangerous shards of glass are not created should the mirror happen to get broken or completely smashed.

As can be seen from the above list, there are many and varied ways to use mirrors as decorations to enhance the beauty, practicality and appeal of your home environment.
